put off delivering

Hola:

Gracias.

The Last post

Hola muchachos:

Saludos cordiales!

Reflection sample

Here I am including a sample of a reflection about a text that I wrote some time ago.
Reflection sample

I mentioned my ideas and you could mention similar ideas, too, but there are many other aspects you could mention. Here are some:

You can mention:
- Your difficulties writing a certain text.
- How much you enjoyed it or didn't enjoy it.
- Some mistakes you made.
- What you learned by writing a text.
- How your writing improved.
- How your organization improved.
- The aspects you need to improve.
- Objectives about your writing for the future.
- Your strengths and weaknesses.

Questions are welcomed and encouraged

Video tutorials

Hi there!

Here you have some video tutorials on how to create blogs and how to create your portfolio with it.

This is a basic tutorial about how to start a blog.

And here you have some links to more videos that might be useful as well.

How to change a template (basic)

How to create a Static Home Page. When you do the posting on your blog, you will always see the last post at the beginning. For your portfolios it is very convenient that the first page is always the same.

If you decide to change the template, consider watching this.

And now that I mention that, I would like to give you some advice.
When we learn how to use new templates in our blog, we feel very excited about it and want to try them all. You try one, then another, and so. But you will find that some of the templates don't work the way you want and you could experience some anoyance, like losing part of your contents. To avoid that, you could consider doing some of these things.

1- Build a trial-and-error blog. If you ruin it, you can solve it because it will be only for tests.

2- Do all the change of templates first, and then start posting. That way you make sure you will material will not suffer.

3- If you already started posting and want to make changes in template, save all your material first.

I must say thanks to Bob Sommers for these great tutorials. Here's his website (with a lot more videos) if you want to learn how to do more things with your blogs.

Portfolio and other FAQs

FAQ means "frequently asked questions." Here you will find the questions you've been asking me when I have seen you in any part of the university.

1- Teacher. How many essays do we have to write, finally? Some classmates are saying that you said "two" in class. How many, then?

That's right. I said two essays during our classes. But now the situation has changed. I already have too much to correct, so I only need you to write one essay. Well, that is the essay that you have already given to me.
If you wrote the second essay, you can give it to me and I can consider it as part of your mark.

2- How do I write the reflections?

Well, as it was said in the iduction session in the lab, you have to write two kinds of reflections. 1) a general reflection, where you consider your work during the term, good and bad aspects, and 2) specific reflections per artifact, where you mention the draft and the asignment, the complications you had, your achievement. I short, the reflections are about how you wrote, not about the topics you wrote about. If you want to mention that you like writing about this topic or no, do it, but in an introdution, not in the reflection. (I'll try to write a couple of samples of reflections)

3- Teacher, when are you going to give us our essays and stories back, so we can include them in the portfolio? Thanks.

I asume that you have copies of the asigments you submit to all you subjects, so you can include that copy in the portfolio. BUT, I think it is very convenient that you know how good your stories and essays were, so I am working to give all your asignments back before you give me the portfolios; that way, you can consider those marks in the reflection, if you wish to do so. I can have that ready for this Friday at 4 in the afternoon. (If you are coming, please send me a message to leave your essays as priority. That was I can guarantee that I will have it, and I can save energies by checking the ones that you'll pick up)

If I get more I will post them here.

regards,

JCA

End-of-Term Information

Dear students:

I hope you’re fine and having success with the last evaluations of all your subjects. It’s been a term with lots of good and bad moments and we’re coming to the end of it, so I would like to thank you all for having written such nice stories and essays, most of them trying to meet the deadlines. It’s been a real pleasure working with you this term. Now I am going to share important information with you.

This is all you need to know for your portfolios.

Contents: (simplified)

* 1 introduction
* 1 pre-writing activity (any actvity: brainstorm, clustering, outlining, freewriting, etc) with its corresponding reflection about it.
* 1 narrative work (any), with its draft, and reflection.
* 1 essay (any essay), its draft and its reflection.
* 1 general reflection (about everything we did during the term, and also about the portfolio itself.)

Notes:
-You can do your porfolio using Power Point, Open Office, or a Blog. You choose. (I'll try to upload a video tutorial of blogging as well)
-If you want to include something else, you are free to do so.
-Take a look at the rubric that I will use to evaluate your portfolios.
-I am working to give your assigments back next Tuesday.
-The new deadline is the 10th of July. (I needed more time to check your work, so I thought you deserved more time too)
- The last essay is not compulsory. (Only one is enough; but if you want to include it, it's okay.)

If you have any doubt, feel free to ask BEFORE the deadline.

Thank you and good luck with your work.

Where is the test?

In room E-3

Parallel A at 9:15 and B at 8:00.
You have three hours available for that.

Good luck!

Monday reading: The Red Death

Dear all:

This is a reminder of our Monday reading. This time, you're going to read another of Edgar Allan Poe's stories, but it will be shorter this time: "The Masque of the Red Death" (<-- This link is only a reference). The evaluation will be written on Monday and it will be together with the previous story, "The Visit."

You can dowload this short story here: The Masque of the Red Death (click on " Request Download Ticket" on the upper left corner, then "descargar"). It will be in the SIGA, too.

Have a great weekend!

PS: Read the story, not the wikipedia link.

Monday reading moved!

As in parallel A there were so few of you, and in the B one you had a test instead of my class, I am leaving the Monday reading "The Visit" for next class, namely, Wednesday for parallel B and Thursday, for parallel A.

Good luck with it!

One before LAST...

The end of the term is approaching and the evaluations are comming.

I just wanted to remind you of some information that might come in handy.

1- Importand dates:
Parallel A: Last Exam: 25th of June (not the 2nd of July - we arranged it in class, remember?);
Portfolio delivery date: 3rd of July.
Parallel B: Last Exam: 25th of June;
Portfolio delivery date: 3rd of July.

2- Don't forget that this Thursday 18th (this week) we have the induction lesson on portfolios at the lab. We're going to start preparing your portfolios there and I'll give you details about the portofio you're going to prepare. I requested LC-1, which is very big. I'll let you know if there are changes.

3- The first essay must be handed in by the 22nd of June. You're supposed to write two essays, from here to the end of the term (and include them in the portfolio). You can choose from any of the three handouts about essays that you have. (Here and in SIGA)

4- You're going to have your short stories back on Monday 22nd of June, mark included. I will try, by all means, to have all results by the 10th of July.

Regards.

JCA

Monday reading: The Visit

I hope you like it. It looks long, but it is quite simple.

The visit (with pictures) You have to click the right button of your mouse and choose "save as" o "guardar como." (If you don't do this, the file will try to open in your web browser and will take ages.)

The visit (printer friendly version)

It was left in FEDERACIÓN copy centre at midday on Friday.

regards,

JCA.

Monday class - Parallel A

Dear all:

I am going to sumarise what we did in class, so, that way, you'll know exactly what we're doing when you show if (if you didn't)

1- We checked the handout called "The Best time to be Alive," which was supposed to be finished last week.

2- We made some progress with the new handout. You have to bring one draft next class (Thursday). You don't have to hand it in, just showing it is enough. It can be based on any of the two handouts he have seen or are seeing.

3- We changes some dates for your convenience. We moved the 2nd exam (or 3rd, if you count the extensive as one) to the 25th of June (It was on the 2nd of July, originally) and we also moved the portfolio delivey date to the 3rd of July for you to have some time to do it, and for me to have more time to check your tests.

4- We are going to continue using the second handout about essays called "Are you getting enough sleep" and we're going to start using the new one (Bilingual education) on Monday 15th.

Feel free to comment.

thanks,

your teacher.

Short Story Instructions

These are the instructions for you to write your short stories.

1- The minimum extension is one page, single spaced, font arial (or similar) size 12, letter size paper. (Maximum margins of 3 cm)
2- I am going to use this rubric to evaluate your story.
3- There isn't a Monday reading. I just want you to devote your time to writing your stories as nicely as you can.

Good luck!

Juan Ch. A.

Don't forget these dates!

We talked about this in class, but experience says that there are ALWAYS people who don't know anything about anything, or just don't care. There are some other people that are just forgetful and a little reminder always comes in handy. This message is for both of them:

We are finishing classes one week later (sorry guys but it wasn't my decision), but all the dates remain the same, not to cause confusion.
We have already seen the first handout about essay writing and we're going to start the second one "Are you getting enough sleep." From here to the end of the term we're going to write 2 essays. We are using 3 handouts but write only 2 essays: You choose.

Write down these dates and make sure you remember them.

Extensive reading: Thursday 28th of May. (A and B)

Exam 2: Thursday 2nd of July (par. A) / Thursday 25th of June (par. B)

Short Story: Feedback: Thursday 4th of June / Delivery: Monday 8th of June, in class. (A and B)

Portfolio: Induction: Thursday 18th of June / Delivery: Tuesday 30th of June. (A and B) Between 10:30 – 12:30 AM, in my office.

Yours,

JCA.

PS: The portfolio was supposed to be handed in on Monday 29th, but it is a holiday (St. Peter and Paul) so I moved it one day. (better for you)

WEEK 11th – (25th to 29th of May)

Some points to ponder:

The Extensive Reading:
As you know, you have to read the book called Rain man, which can be downloaded here(web album), here (.doc) or here (.pdf) or copied at Cigeno (there is a page missing, and I am solving this ASAP). If you'd like you can watch the film. I hope you enjoy it. The test will be written.

You can dowload the film here: click (You'll find a list of links. Dowload them, uncompress them and enjoy :-) )

The handouts:
We haven't finished with the spelling handout, so you must bring it to all classes until we end with it. There are three other handouts at the copy centre (Cígeno), in the SIGA, and here as usual. I numbered them. You have to bring number 1 (The Best Tiem to Be Alive) next Monday 25th.
Number 1:
right click: "guardar enlace como": The best time to be alive.doc
right click: "guardar enlace como": The best time to be alive.pdf

Number 2:
right click: "guardar enlace como": Are you getting enough sleep.doc
right click: "guardar enlace como": Are you getting enough sleep.pdf

Number 3:
right click: "guardar enlace como": For and Against Bilingual Education.doc
right click: "guardar enlace como": For and Against Bilingual Education.pdf

The short story:
Don't forget that the deadline is on Monday 8th of June and the feedback on Thursday 4th of June (You have to show your progress on that day).

The grammar in your texts:
You have improved your punctuation, but the progress is little in grammar. Some of you are still making the same mistakes and that is a situation that will bring you trouble in the future. We must pay special attention to your grammar. In future corrections, I am going to discount the double of points when you make elementary mistakes. What's an elementary mistake? Well, that is something we're going to see in class.
Have good week!
Comments are welcome.

This is the one

I got fed up wiith the other blog, so I decided to create a new one.
